The Grand Opening Celebration of ZNF

The grand opening celebration of the Center for Science and Peace Research (Zentrum für Naturwissenschaft und Friedensforschung – ZNF) was held on July 7, 2006. Marking this significant and historical event was a Senate reception and a scientific Colloquium. The meaningful speeches of the University President Dr. Lüthje, the DSF Chairman Prof. Dr. Rittberger, and the Senator of Culture Prof. von Welck offered a sense of hope and pleasure about the start of an ambitious and challenging center with an interdisciplinary approach. Significantly gracing the occasion were Prof. Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker, son of the name giver of the Foundation Chair, and Prof. Egon Bahr, a pioneer on German eastern politics and the former director of IFSH; both proposed a toast to ZNF. Joining Prof. Kalinowski as speakers of the scientific colloquium were two guests from abroad, namely Alyson Bailes (director of Stockholm International Peace Research Institute - SIPRI) and Prof. W.K. Panofsky from Stanford who, a day before, became Honorary Senator as awarded by the university.

All speeches and contributions are published as Volume 11 in the series “Hamburger Universitätsreden. Neue Folge”. This commemorative publication is available for download (pdf file) via sub.uni-hamburg.de and a printed version to order.
