Public Talks

We are glad to pronounce that we were able to invite Prof Dr. Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker and Angelika Beer to deliver a speech on Friday the 14th of August about their work on the field of arms controll and disarmament.

Angelika Beer has been a member of the European Parliament in the foreign affairs commission, the commission for security and defence policy and the Iran-delegation of the European parliament from 2004 to 2009. She was a delegate in the German Bundestag for Alliance '90/The Greens from 1987 to 1990 and from 1994 to 2002, where she was also the spokes person for defence policy of the Alliance '90/The Greens. Furthermore, she is chairwoman of the Parliamentarian Network for Conflict Prevention and Human Security and for the Anti-racism and Human Rights Campaign. Her presentation will be focused on the foreign affairs policy as well as the security and defence policy of the European Union. She will also explain the EU positions on Iran and on nuclear disarmament.

Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker, son of the patron of the Centre for Science and Peace Research Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker, held the position of a dean at the Donald Bren School for Environmental Science and Management, University of California, Santa Barbara, USA. During his time as a SPD delegate in the German Bundestag he was the chairman of the Enquête-commission "Globalisation of the world economy - challenges and answers" and thereafter chairman of the commission for environment, nature protection and reactor safety. Before this he was the President of the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy.

In his talk von Weizsäcker will go into the ambivalence between science and peace research as well as the necessity of this combination.

The talks starts 2:00 o'clock in the main building of the University of Hamburg, Edmund Siemers Allee 1, Lecture Hall B.
