Radioxenon isotopes are the most reliable indicators to prove that an explosion is of nuclear nature. However, at many locations frequent observations of radioxenon from civilian sources are made. Therefore, the ZNF developes and test methods that support distinguishing between signatures of legitimate civilian releases and those that might possibly indicate a nuclear explosion. This is done in close cooperation with the Provisional Technical Secretariat (PTS) of the Preparatory Commission for the CTBT Organisation (CTBO) in Vienna.CTBT).
