Interdisciplinary Research Group for the Analysis of Biological Risks (INFABRI)
The Interdisciplinary Research Group for the Analysis of Biological Risks (INFABRI) was established in 2017 at the Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker-Centre for Science and Peace Research (ZNF) at the University of Hamburg.
The aim of the research group is to bring together existing and develop new methods for the analysis of biological risks. The spectrum of threats considered ranges from natural epidemics to laboratory accidents and bioterrorist attacks.
To take into account the complexity and multidimensionality of biological risks, the research group is composed of scientists from the following disciplines:
- Microbiology
- Epidemiology
- Mathematics
- Computer Science
- Sociology
- Political Science
The interdisciplinary structure of the research group allows a more holistic approach to the topics. For example, the fear that research on new technologies could also be misused for the development of biological weapons or for bioterrorist purposes (Dual Use Research of Concern - DURC) is not only investigated through microbiological experiments, but also with regard to governance aspects and their social impact.
